MUSE
4 July – 6 March 2012. RSA Friends Room
Portraying the female character and figure has always been a fascination for artists and the RSA collections hold a wealth of material demonstrating the real diversity of art inspired by the queen of muses. From Robert Hope and John Aiken to contemporary treatments by Adrian Wiszniewski and Calum Colvin, a web of influences and reflections is revealed. This exhibition will give a long overdue airing to some of the most spectacular works from the RSA collections. SYLVIA WISHART
1 – 29 February 2012. RSA Finlay Room & RSA Projects Room
This exhibition examines the works of Sylvia Wishart RSA (1936-2008) concentrating on the work created in, and inspired by, her abodes in Hoy and Stromness.

RSA NEW CONTEMPORARIES 2012
17 March– 11 April 2012. All RSA Galleries Admission price £4/£2 conc.
A smashing line up of the best fine art & architecture graduates from the 2011 degree shows. Selected from the five art schools and six architecture colleges across Scotland, some 60 artists and architects will present new bodies of work made over the past year, launching their careers in the prestigious RSA galleries. This year’s exhibition convenors are Glen Onwin RSA and Kathryn Findlay RSA (Elect).

A ROYAL TASTE: landscape paintings from the RSA collections
(A Diamond Jubilee Celebration)

23 April - 17 September 2012. RSA Friends Room
The first of two exhibitions from the RSA collections in 2012 celebrating the Diamond Jubilee explores the development of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Scottish Academy, from a visual arts perspective.
The exhibition will include work by Ian Fleming, Frances Walker, James Morrison, John Miller, James Fairgrieve, John Houston and John Busby; artists who define Scottish landscape and its place in the heart of our Queen. RSA 186th ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2012
28 April – 6 June 2012. All RSA Galleries Admission price £5/£2 conc.
A highlight of the RSA programme, this curated exhibition features invited new works from across Scotland and beyond. Invited artists include RSA members and international artists as well as RSA Morton Award and RSA Barns Graham Award winners. A further selection of curated works from the RSA Collection will be on show. This year's conveners are James Castle RSA, Doug Cocker RSA and Ric Russell RSA (Elect).

DRAWING FROM THE LANDSCAPE
16 June – 22 July 2012. RSA Projects Room
The first of two exhibitions highlighting the work of RSA members alongside artists from the RSA Awards and Exhibitions Programme, this exhibitions focuses on artists and architects who use drawing as a direct means of recording their experiences of the built and natural landscape, and as a way of exploring and communicating their observations through line and tone, to painting,
printmaking and sculpture. Artists include: RSA Residencies for Scotland Award Winner Mhairi Killin, Frances Walker RSA and RSA John Kinross and RSA Residencies for Scotland winner Anna Gibb


TUTAJ/ TERAZ (HERE NOW): An investigation of Polish contemporary artists in Scotland
28 July – 9 September 2012. RSA Projects Room
With the intention of highlighting and developing the already strong links between the RSA and Poland, this exhibition will survey the work of six Polish-born artists who completed their degrees at Scottish art schools. The exhibition will include printmaking, drawing, painting, photography and painting. Artists include: RSA Barns-Graham Award Winner Aleksandra Zawada, Olga Rek, Grazyna Dobrzelecka, Agata Dymus- Kazmierczak and New Contemporaries artists Magdalena Blasinka and Joanna Lyczko.

OF NATURAL AND MYSTICAL THINGS
15 September – 4 November 2012. RSA Projects Room
The second of two exhibitions highlighting the work of RSA members alongside artists from RSA Awards and Exhibitions Programme, this show, loosely based on the idea of the Wunderkammer or Kunstkammer, presents a number of artists whose work explores the physical, philosophical and mystical nature of the world. From the physiological study of the natural world and it’s genetic hybridisation, to the symbolic and transformative power of ritual, religion, and the shadowy worlds of mysticism and mythology, each artist shines an inquisitive, uncanny and sometimes humorous light on the world as they see it. Exhibiting artists include: Glen Onwin RSA, Ashley Nieuwenhuizen, Bridget Steed, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Lara Scouller & Lindsay Sekulowicz.

SCOTTISH PAINTERS AND LIMNERS: works from the RSA collections (A Diamond Jubilee Celebration)

In 1823 the historic position of Painter and Limner, a member of the Royal Household in Scotland, returned to its roots of being awarded to a distinguished Scottish artist for the first time in one hundred years.
Scottish Painters and Limners weaves a path through the life, work and influence of the eminent Scottish artists bestowed with this prestigious position. The exhibition will be mounted in two parts: part one features the work of the Limners active from the reign of King George IV to Queen Victoria and part two from the reign of King Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth II in the present day. RSA OPEN 2012
24 November 2012 – 31 January 2013. RSA Lower Galleries
A selected exhibition of small works sourced by open selection from artists across Scotland. Including new paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, photographs, film and architecture. With a large range of well-priced works and the availability of the Own Art scheme, this exhibition is a terrific opportunity to make a purchase from this prestigious exhibition just in time to get on the walls for Christmas!
All works will be selected from an open submission policy. The hand-in dates for work are 9th and 10th November. More Information about how to submit work will be available from our website closer to the time. Please note there is a size restriction on works – maximum 80cm in any direction, including frame.

RSA ARCHITECTURE OPEN 2012
24 November - 16 December 2012. RSA Projects Room
Calling all architects! This year the RSA are pleased to open up a new room in the Open exhibition and, for the first time, use it to showcase the most interesting current architectural practice drawn from across Scotland. On display will be a range of models, architectural drawings, film and other design work.
All works will be selected from an open submission policy. More Information about how to submit work will be available from our website closer to the time.
