William Nicholson, R.S.A., a native of Newscatle up on Syne and born in 1784 was one of the Original members, and for some tim Secretary of the Royal Scottish Academy. He painted both in Oil and Water Colors, and etched a series of plates from his own drawings.
His portraits in Water Colors were much admired; in that style he painted Sir Walter Scott and other eminent men of the day. He died in Edinburgh in 1844.
