Elected ARSA: 10 November 1852

Elected RSA: 10 February 1869

Mr. Robert Thorburn Ross, R.S.A., died on the 13th July. He was made Associate in 1853, and Academician in 1869, and for many years was a regular and valued contributor to the Annual Exhibition.

Of indutrious habits, and possessing very considerable artistic ability, he produced a large number of works, mainly illustrative of scenes in the life of the humbler Scottish peasantry. Latterly he gave himself with evident relish to the fine of the delineation of sea-side views and incidents, and these he treated with marked success, both in oil and water-colour.

Mr. Ross's amaibility and modesty of character secured for him the kindly esteem of his brother Artists, while, as a painter, he justly attained, in the estimation of the public, no small measure of popularity.
