Elected ARSA: 18 March 1925
Peter Wishart RSA was born near Aberdour, Fife in 1846. He spent many years working in business in Edinburgh before studying art at the Royal Institution. His work took him to Antwerp where he worked in the Academy under Verlat, a teacher whom Wishart had great admiration for and who inspired many characters of Wishart’s own works.
Wishart’s work mainly focused on landscapes, painting several inspired by the Scheldt whilst in Antwerp, many of which were considerably influential for students of the Royal Scottish Academy. Alongside paintings inspired by the Scheldt, Wishart found great inspiration from nature and found subjects in the hills and streams of Scotland.
He was elected ARSA in 1925 and his works A Highland River and Mending their Nets are included in the Thorburn Ross Collection.
