Julia Johnstone is a BA(Hons) Painting and Printmaking graduate (2021) from the Glasgow School of Art and is currently studying for her Master of Fine Arts degree at GSA. She recently worked as the Senior Exhibition Assistant at Alberta Whittle’s exhibition held at the Venice Biennale 2022.
Julia’s work is informed by performance art documentation and discusses themes of liveness, documentation and moving image, and looks to question how an audience might encounter performance art. Her practice is underpinned with an interest in Scottish landscape, colour, and temporality which she is exploring further within her postgraduate degree. Ongoing research relates to materiality, specifically looking to the Scottish Collateral Event as a key case study.
The Mouse is a short film commissioned by the Glasgow School of Art for the Christmas Card 2021. A mouse king is lost in the digital spaces around Glasgow at Christmas time. The digital screens around Glasgow city centre provide the stage for the mouse’s performance. The mouse king endeavours to discover the digital realm, dressed in purple and tulle splendour. This production brought together a creative team that included graduates and students from GSA, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and City of Glasgow College.
