Calum McFadyen graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design with a 1st class honours degree in Fine Art Practice in 2021. Upon graduation he received the James Guthrie Orchar Award. He has since exhibited in Tatha Gallery’s Bold Beginnings Group Exhibition (2022) and Street Level Photoworks Open Exhibition (2022).
Calum’s recent practice has been focused on the materiality of colour, painting and printmaking in its varied characteristics of substance, and the application of mark-making to create perceptions of depth and feeling. He thinks of his creations as more than just objects and hopes to convey something more sensual. ‘I am trying to activate the viewer on a primitive level, digging up the oldest instincts within our evolutionary template’.
These works are an extension of the paintings that Calum felt were too large to present on one wall. He decided to commit the entire wall to works created using photoplate lithography. The works are unique and not editioned. He sees printmaking as another way to expand the dialogue between him and the process. He believes this allows discoveries to naturally reveal themselves. ‘The work must control the artist not the artist the work’.
Calum currently lives and works in Glasgow.
