I was born in the 1950s and lived on a farm in a small rural community in the north east of Scotland. Through my work I have revisited my childhood to explore its relevance to contemporary culture. I have collected artefacts which hold memories of place and people and which tell of the shared belief and value systems of a small rural community.
Through this installation of made, found and distressed objects, this work attempts to recreate my childhood experience of education. Like all memories which are fallible, unstable and subject to change over time, these objects are constructed in such a way as to convey this. Relating to the post WWII period, the installation prompts consideration of the values and belief systems and the political and social history of that time. In this way the viewer is invited to consider their own educational experiences and how these relate to the present.
On graduating from Moray School of Art, UHI, with a BA Fine Art (Hons) degree in 2023, I received the VAS Graduate Showcase Award, Grampian Hospitals Art Trust Exhibition Award and the Moray School of Art Alumni Award.
