Six Feet Under is the continuation of Take Back Your Voice, 2021, and a depiction of ancient Persian women to Iranian women of today. Using poetry in Restore My Hymen, I convey a message of encouraging women to be brave and strong, to speak up and stand together. The film is a representation of oppression and the great gender divide, the final scene captures her dying moment wrapped in a chador, like a shroud.
The term ‘kafan-e siah’ was used by women to fight against the Islamic state laws opposing mandatory hijab. Kafan (shroud) is a length of white cloth in which the deceased is wrapped for burial. Siah means black in Farsi; therefore ‘Kafan-e Siah’ is a pejorative reference to the black chador. Kafan-e Siah, 2022, is a visual concept of the pejorative term which is put to play through the continuation of the last scene of Restore My Hymen.
The chadors symbolise the restrictive laws imposed on women. Consequently, the suspended chadors are meant to evoke the challenges Iranian women face in their daily lives.
