Rebecca Rose McCormack-Haigh is a recent graduate of The Glasgow School of Art specialising in painting and printmaking. Since graduating, she now focuses on screenprinting at M.A.R.S Print Studio with Master Screenprinter Matthew Rich and holds memberships at Glasgow Print Studio and PrintClan CIC, an open access textile printing studio.
In July 2023, Becca took part in the PEATS Traditional Crafts and Skills programme in Bulgaria, engaging in a month-long exploration of traditional crafts like embroidery, ceramics, mural painting, felting, and jewellery making within rural Bulgarian towns.
Becca’s artistic exploration centres on the expressive possibilities of screenprinting on various fabrics at PrintClan in Glasgow. Moving on from monochromatic drawings, she employs a bold palette, layering large geometric shapes to construct narratives.
Her current work draws inspiration from the significance of handmade objects within domestic spaces, reflecting on her grandfather’s creations of wooden furniture and musical instruments. These cherished remnants continue to be used by his children and grandchildren and profoundly influence Becca’s artistic practice.
The theme of ‘home’ is central to her project, exemplified in her screenprinted tablecloth—the symbolic centrepiece of a home. Recreating her grandparents’ tablecloth from their Ballybane, Ireland home, she weaves a narrative, combining imagery from Ireland and reflections on her seven childhood homes. In the exhibition, she invites viewers to engage with the tangible essence of familial ties and the enduring influence of handmade artefacts, transforming the gallery into a visual dialogue on the significance of ‘home’ and the significance of the objects in our lives.
