Maella Wallace is a Glasgow born artist, who graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee, with an accredited Masters in 2023. Wallace’s work won the Generator Project Award and secured her a full scholarship to progress on to the MFA course.
Through a social political lens, her work analyses and further critiques the absence of traditional craft within art history. The concern that these methods are not proportionately valued within ‘high art’ is understood within Wallace’s work as a symptom of classism and sexism. Her work surveys the space between contemporary practice and craft methodology, drawing inspiration from community and heritage.
Ceremony is a heartfelt response to grief and the rituals we create to honour those we have lost. The piece functions as a personal altar, a space where remembrance and reflection is invited. Drawing inspiration from religious artworks and the sanctuaries of worship, shape and colour capture the commonality of these spiritual arenas.
