Madeleine Marg is a Duncan of Jordanstone graduate from Morayshire. She is a current recipient of the RSA Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Award. She currently works in Hexham for British sculptor Antony Gormley.
Marg’s sculptural practice centres on the theme of dissociation from reality within Westernised society and its impact on community connections. Her work reflects the hostility and alienation fostered by technological advancements, consumerism and post-industrial capitalism, exploring the interplay between real-life communities and the virtual world. Her practice engages a range of mediums and processes: painting, airbrushing, casting, ceramics, video, sound and installation.
Marg’s installation, ‘iPad Baby’, critically examines the development of technology during her lifetime through the evolution of childhood play. She presents ‘the new’, ‘the now’ and ‘the old’, examining how technology reduces imagination, active thinking and socialisation.
Casting toys from her childhood, Marg manipulates their colour, transforming them into dull, monochromatic objects, creating a dystopian world where media drains the colour and richness from everyday life, rendering it boring.
Marg’s work uses extremes as a warning for our current human condition, aiming to encourage change and address her concerns for future generations.
