Double Pivot is a public art studio based in Bradford, West Yorkshire formed by Glasgow School of Art graduates Joseph Cole and James Arkwright. We use public space to facilitate self-expression and break down barriers to participation in the arts. We are currently working alongside project partners such as the Society of Dyers and Colourists, South Square Centre and Bradford City of Culture 2025.

Featured is a selection of outcomes from ongoing work. These include extracts from our project Open Music, which aims to maintain a radically accessible platform through which young people can express themselves by making electronic music. The locus of this project is a filing cabinet in the middle of Oastler Market, which we have modified into a basic open-source Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The anonymous music made on this DAW is periodically collated and circulated through community radio and on our own platforms.

Turn-of-the-century contents from the filing cabinet used for this project are presented here as viewable material. A fragment from the original Oastler Market sign is preserved in preparation for the market’s immanent demolition.

Open Music remains operational and can be accessed at Oastler Shopping Centre, John Street, Bradford, BD1 3JS or via the livestream featured in this exhibition.
