Fenris Wolf and Ragnar Thorfinn used the tent both as a prop in their performances and in practical terms during their residency. They were the first artists to use Summerton’s unique artwork in the RSA Collection (two-person tent which RSA Residencies or Scholarship recipients can use to their own ends during their residency).
'Summerton’s Safe House is revolutionary in another way, in that it is the first artwork to enter the collections that is designed to be used, changing or perhaps even being replaced as a result. Safe House contains a tent that is available to academy members and scholars in receipt of awards. It can be used on residencies, travelling scholarships or artist expeditions, or should a member become homeless or destitute. On using the tent they must record their journey on one of the postcards that form part of the work, but should the tent be lost or stolen, Summerton will replace it ‘on receipt of an exciting and informative description of the event.’ Sandy Wood, RSA Collections Curator
