Mrs Margaret Hislop, who was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Grant, was born at West Calder on 27th June 1895, and was educated
at West Calder High School.

 

She studied at Edinburgh College of Art and exhibited regularly in the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy, the Scottish Society of Women Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists, specialising in still life and flower studies.

 

She was married in 1921 to Andrew Healey Hislop, who was on the staff of Edinburgh College of Art. She was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1950 and an Academician in 1964. For the last year or two her health was not good and at the end of 1971, at her own request, she was placed on the Honorary Retired List. Of a gentle nature, she was popular with her fellow Members.

 

Mrs Hislop is represented in Permanent Collections in Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow and Australia, and also in Private Collections in this country and America. She was also honoured to have works bought by Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on one of their visits to the Academy. She died in hospital in Edinburgh on 8th May 1972, and is survived by her daughter; her husband having predeceased her in 1954.
