Malcolm Gavin was born of Scottish parentage in 1874 and received his early education in Edinburgh. Later, he studied art at South Kensington and at the Royal Academy School. He was especially interested in portraiture and while in London he frequently exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters where his work attracted considerable attention. After returning to live in Edinburgh, Mr. Gavin was a regular exhibitor at the R.S.A. and was elected an Associ- ate in 1920. He carried out a number of important commissions and he was particularly successful in his portraits of women. Gavin returned to London many years ago and died there on 4th April 1956.
