Joseph Morris Henderson RSA 1864-1936

The death of J. Morris Henderson occurred with suddenness in Glasgow on the 28th November. He was the youngest son of the late Joseph Henderson, R.S.W., and his two brothers were also artists. He was born in Glasgow in 1864 and was a graduate of Glasgow University.

Mr. Henderson received his vocational training at the School of Art in Glasgow, and naturally learned a great deal in the studio of his father, and from the community of interests with his brothers. His work was mainly landscape and sea and shore pictures. From the beginning of his career he contributed to the Exhibitions of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Art Institute, and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

He was closely connected with the Glasgow Art Club, and was a member of the Com- mittee of Management of the Paisley Art Institute. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928, and was raised to Academician rank in February of last year.

His Diploma Work is entitled ‘Summer Clouds.”’ He is represented in the Glasgow Gallery at Kelvingrove by a landscape “ In the Meadow,” and also in Paisley and in various Galleries at home and abroad. Mr. Henderson devoted a great deal of time to the affairs of the Scottish Artists Benevolent Association, and was its President for several years prior to his death. His beneficent interest in this connection was highly esteemed by his fellow artists. He is survived by his widow and a grown-up family.
