Elected RSA: 10 July 1829 

 

Within a very few weeks after the grave had closed over the remains of J. E. Lauder, the Academy was called to mourn the demise of his still more eminent brother, their esteemed friend and fellow-member, Robert Scott Lauder, The Council, while desirous of inscribing here their very high testimony to Mr. Lauder’s great qualities, feel that the wide reputation which his works enjoy render it unnecessary to enlarge on his peculiar merits as an artist.

 

His professional education was thorough ; lengthened residence and earnest study in Italy adding a higher culture to his earlier home training, See ak oa So OS Death of W. Crawford, AK.S.A. Death of John Elder, W.s and enabling him to produce those works of refined intelligence and tender harmony which are still fresh in the memory of many.

 

He returned to Edinburgh in 1851, on his appointment as master of the higher department of the School under the management of the Hon. the Board of Manufactures; and this position he held until he was suddenly incapacitated by disease for all further labour.

 

His love for Art, joined to a sensitive and ardent temperament, was fitted to kindle a corresponding enthusiasm in his students; and not a few of the younger aspirants in the profession, in London and elsewhere, will gratefully acknowledge how much they owe to the unfailing kindness and sympathy, as well as able guidance, of Robert Scott Lauder.

 

The President and Council, along with many other members of the Academy, were present at the funeral in their official capacity.
