Elected RSA: 10 July 1829 [1826]
Samuel Joseph R.S.A. the son of the treasurer of St John's College, Cambridge, was a pupil of P. Roww, and also studied at the Royal Acaemy schools, where in 1815 he attained the Hold Medal for a group 'Eve Supplicating Forgiveness.'
He settled in Edinburgh in 1823 and was very popular as a sculptor of busts. He was induced to return to London in 1828, but his success there as not quite decided. Probably his best known work in the metropolis is the statue of Wilberforce in Westminster Abbey.
His style seems more suited for bronze than marble, having a look of decision reclaimed from hardness by the freedom of his handling. He died in London in 1850.
