Born in Aberdeen in 1952, Ian Howard RSA studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1970-1975). His practice incorporated painting, drawing and printmaking and focused on themes including art and science, alchemical symbolism, hermeticism, emblems, medieval and renaissance iconography. 

 

In the 1980s Ian Howard was Lecturer in Painting at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, and he was Principal of ECA from 2001 to 2011. Ian exhibited in solo and group shows at Talbot Rice Gallery, Compass Gallery, Peacock Printmakers, Pier Centre in Orkney, Printworks in Chicago, Open Eye, Third Eye Centre, and the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh and Glasgow amongst many others.

 

Throughout his career Howard gained prestigious awards and accolades, establishing him as a significant voice in contemporary Scottish art.
