Burnett N, H. Orphoot was born at Peebles, son of the Sheriff-Substitute for the Lothians and Peebles.
He was educated at Rugby and Edinburgh University, and studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris. His early work in Edinburgh and London brought him into contact with Sir Rowand Anderson and Sir George Washington Browne.
Mr. Orphoot concentrated on domestic architecture, and houses designed by him include Sylbie, near Alyth, and Leithfield, Angus. His work also included the Peebles War Memorial, the Veterans' Garden City Settlement at Trinity (Edinburgh) and Bonnyrig, the restoration of Haddington Episcopal Church, and Haystoun House, Peeblesshire.
In 1934, he was elected an Associate Member of the Academy, and became a full Academician in 1942. He died at his home, Well House, Murrayfield, Edinburgh, on 8th April, 1964. He was predeceased by his wife many years ago, and is survived by his sister.
