Elected ARSA: 18 March 1931

W. J. Walker Todd, died on 29th April at his residence 34 Inveileith Terrace, Edinburgh. He was born in Glasgow in 1884. 

 

On leaving Fettes College he received his first training in art in the old School of Art on the Mound, and was awarded a Scottish National Art Survey Studentship in 1905 and a Royal Institute Travelling Scholarship the following year.

 

About 1909 he started business as an Architect on his own account and thereafter became a partner of Mr. Dick Peddie. In that capacity, and later after Mr. Peddie's death he designed many important buildings in the classical tradition.

 

Among the important works for which he was responsible may be mentioned Merchiston Castle School, Colinton; Royal Bank of Scotland, Hope Street, and the British Linen Bank on the South Bridge, Edinburgh; the County Buildings at Haddington and a Memorial Hall at Innerleithen. 

 

During the European war,1914-1918, Mr. Todd served in France with the 8th Royal Scots and had the rank of Captain. He had a long and prominent association with the Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh; and was also a member of the Scottish Arts Club. In 1931 he was elected an Associate of the Academy and was a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. 

 

He is survived by Mrs. Walker Todd, five sons and five daughters.
