Scott Sutherland was born in Wick, Caithness in 1910. After completing his schooling in Wick, he commenced his training at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1928 and from 1929 to 1933 he studied sculpture under Alexander Carrick RSA at Edinburgh College of Art.  

 

After completion of his studies, he was awarded a scholarship to L'École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1934 which greatly influenced his work at the time. Following this he studied sculpture in Egypt, Greece, Italy, France and Germany on a Carnegie Scholarship.
