Elected RSA: 7 October 1829
J. Francis Williams RSA was born in Perthshire in 1785. He appears to have gone to England at an early age and favoured scene painting.
He returned to Edinburgh around 1810 where he worked as a paint-scene for the Edinburgh Theatre before devoting his attentions full time to being a landscape painter. He first exhibited his work with the Associated Artists in 1811.
He was one of the founding members of the RSA in 1826 who later withdrew but then once again became a member of the RSA on the 7th of October 1829. He held the position of treasurer for fourteen years, from 1832-1846.
