Elected ARSA: 18 March 1896

Alexander William Wellwood Rattray, A.R.S.A., born at St Andrews in 1849, was eldest son of the Reverend Alexander Rattray, present Minister of Parkhead Parish, Glasgow. He received his education at the Glasgow Academy and the University, and became a student of the Glasgow School of Art.

 

In furtherance of his art, he went to the Continent and visited many of the Art Galleries. He was devoted to landscape painting, and exhibited in 1876 for the first time in the Royal Scottish Academy two works "Arran from Kileraggan" and "Sketch in Bute." 

 

His most important works include - : "Neath the Green Shade," 1879; "O'er the Muir among the Heather," 1880; "Loch Ard," 1881; "A Scottish Farm," 1882; "A Summer Afternoon, Aubery Park, Surrey," "From Hillside to the Sea," "Early Summer," 1884; "Gloamin's Glamour," 1886; "Autumn Sunshine," 1888; "A December Pastoral," 1889; "Largo Bay," 1890; "The King's Port, Carradale," 1891; "Golden Leaves," 1892; "Evening at the Ferry," 1893; "Evening in Venice," 1894; "A June Day, Kintyre," 1896; "May Blossoms," 1897; "The White Cliff, East Devon," 1901; "Summer Breezes, Island of Coll," 1902.

 

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1896. He died at his residence in Glasgow on 17th April.
