Sylvia Wishart RSA was born in Stromness, Orkney in 1936. Upon leaving school, she worked for the Post Office before leaving Orkney to study at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. Wishart won a post-diploma year at the school and went on to spend several years teaching in Aberdeenshire, Lewis and Orkney before being awarded a Scottish Arts Council grant which enabled her to devote all her time to painting.

Wishart returned to Gray’s School of Art, where she remained teaching until 1987. During this time, she continued to paint, exhibiting in several group shows including the Faroe Islands Gallery, the Aberdeen Artists Society and Compass Gallery, Glasgow. On her own, she exhibited throughout Scotland including through 57 Gallery in Edinburgh, Compass Gallery and Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.

Alongside being an accomplished painter, Wishart also made fine art screen prints and etchings with Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen and Highland Printmakers in Inverness. She was elected ARSA in June 1993 and made a full member in May 2005.
