Avila is one of a group of powerful images produced by Wilson in 1933 following his travel to Spain the previous year. It shows the emergence of his mature style. Wilson first exhibited an impression of this print at the RSA in 1935 (cat.818). Avila features an ambitiously large plate size, which he would continue for a number of his Scottish Highland landscapes.
