The 1911 RSA Annual Exhibition included "Bridge of St. Martin, Toledo" by Adam Bruce Thomson. He travelled to Spain in 1910 and the country had a lasting impression on his work. That Wilson found himself inspired by the same subject 23 years later was likely influenced by Thomson. Wilson has not reversed his preparatory sketch but transferred it direct to the plate.
