A decorated veteran of the First World War, Darling (1885-1962) was by trade a silk mercer. The businessman became Lord Provost of Edinburgh and served as the Unionist MP for Edinburgh South. One of his books was published by R Grant of Edinburgh in 1948 about the same time as Wilson provided illustrations for their edition of R L Stevenson's Picturesque Notes.
