William Fleming Vallance was born in Paisley in 1827, moving to Leith in his early life where he received his education. Having shown an interest in drawing and modelling he entered the Board of Trustees’ School and studied there under E. Dallas and Robert Scott Lauder RSA. In 1849 he exhibited for the first time at the Royal Scottish Academy with his work, “Portrait of a Lady”.
A few years later he turned his attention to painting in oil and watercolour, focusing on marine subjects, for which he is most well-known.
He was elected ARSA in 1875 and RSA in 1881.
