Elected RSA: 07 October 1829
John Syme was born in Edinburgh in 1793. He studied at the Trustees Academy and was employed by Raeburn as an assistant. After the death of Raeburn, he practiced as a painter, but bad health eventually led to him leaving the practice.
He was one of the original founding members of the [Royal] Scottish Academy in 1826.
