Wilson had first visited Brittany, taking in Tréboul, on a sketching trip with Edgar Holloway.The area had been popular with the English artist Christpher Wood whose work they both admired. In 1953, the area served as the base for Wilson's close friend, Anne Redpath during a painting holiday.
