In 1924, on the advice of his friend John Keppie, Benno Schotz would dedicate himself entirely to being an artist. Giving up his job as an engineer at the shipbuilder John Brown and Company, he became an assistant to the sculptor Alexander Proudfoot RSA, which Schotz said gave him the chance to ‘change from amateur to professional status’.
