The painting is informed by the Cubist approaches he encountered when in Paris with his friend, the artist William Crozier, in 1923. The black vase to the left would be used by Gillies throughout his still lifes as a reminder of death, but it first appears here, shortly after the passing of his young friend Crozier in 1930.
