Gillies was heavily influenced by Munch’s paintings saying they ‘shook me’, adding, ‘and I had a fairly long spell of violent, sweeping, sometimes almost expressionist landscapes’. This painting of Durisdeer, a small village in Dumfries and Galloway, is a wonderful example of the landscapes to which Gillies refers.
