This picture helped me to focus on these areas because of where the light is hitting, and where the shadows are falling on the portraits face.
I was also inspired by the simple white aspects of this piece which helped place the portrait in the spotlight and created a sense of peace and harmony throughout the composition. I really loved the concept of the birds which I believe helped elevate the portrait and further added to the idea of tranquility, along with the facial expression. I feel this composition and colour palette makes the woman not only stand out but also look as though she is a goddess and shows off her beauty in a subtle way.
I decided to use coloured pencils to replicate the same feel of the original photograph and not lose any coloured or tone in the process. It allowed me to add in the details which could be lost if I were to paint this such as the fine lines in the earrings and the texture of her hair. Using coloured pencils also helped me ensure that the artwork would have a high-quality finish, which was really important to me. Not only that but choosing to use coloured pencils in this drawing has helped me improve my application of colour and blending tones together to achieve a true to life effect.
Going into this art competition I knew I wanted to show a drawing which was atmospheric. I am thrilled that this work has been selected for a prize. Thank you.3of 3
