I originally took a reference photo for this painting as the sun rose over Borneo, while we sat at the peak of Mt Kinabalu. On further scrutiny, however I felt the photo fell short of capturing the beauty of the event. So, I attempted to recreate the scene, using acrylic paint. Because of my choice of medium I painted on sturdy cardboard as it would resist buckling when I layered my paint on . I focused on creating contrast between the warm sunlight and cool toned shadows. This contrast is essential for emulating natural lighting, this technique captures the atmosphere of sunrise.
