More than half of the surface area, depicting the scrub trees of the picture's title, is essentially formless. Through his manipulation of brushstrokes and subtle layering of paint, Gillies creates the impression of thick undergrowth. Only occasionally does he revert to physically drawing in trunks or branches in the foreground.
