The two remained close and Gillies acknowledged the influence which MacTaggart, along with several other of his Scottish contemporaries, had had on Gillies' own work. Indeed this is particularly noticeable at around this time where the quality of both men's painting owes much to the expressive handling of paint exemplified by Chaim Soutine.
