Schotz was Head of Sculpture and Ceramics at Glasgow School of Art from 1938 to 1961. The college was an important symbol of the friendliness with which he was welcomed into Scotland and its artistic community. Schotz saw himself as a Scot and a Glaswegian.
This impressive half portrait was modelled in 1957 when Fletcher was a student of Schotz’s at GSA. He died tragically the following year when on a travelling scholarship to Italy.
