The artist: "This mixed media piece is part of the project ‘Industrial Decay’ that I did for my Higher Art Folio where I explored and studied a derelict jute mill in Dundee. I wanted to tell the story of the consequences time has had on this building as it decayed; from desertion to finding a new purpose to store tyres, decaying walls turning into a canvas for graffiti artists. I captured these by using different medias: acrylic paint to highlight the textures, patterns, and scale of the building; mono printing onto a newsprint collage to add the tyres with impact; and using painted string over the top to recreate the look of bars and beams that appear throughout the building. The string I added has a similar texture to jute, which the building was originally used to produce. The joyful disposition of the faces painted by the graffiti artist contrasts dramatically with the sad sight of industrial decline and decay. To have my work recognised by the RSA is an honour, thank you."1of 3
