High Sunderland is a category A listed home set in the woodlands between Selkirk and Galashiels. The residence, designed in 1957 by Peter Womersley ARSA for renowned textile designer Bernat Klein, is distinguished by its clean lines, expansive open plan layout, and generous use of glass panelling.
Following a 2017 fire, Glasgow based architecture firm Loader Monteith were contracted to undertake a meticulous and faithful restoration. Completed in 2021, Loader Monteith's restoration has now been shortlisted for the 2022 RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
Enjoy a guided tour of the home, followed by drinks and canapes in the main room. There will also be the opportunity to take a short walk to view the exterior of Bernat Kleins former studio, also designed by Womersley. The imposing brutalist structure remains closed to the public as it requires refurbishment and was listed on the Buildings at Risk Register in 2002.
On our journey we will first visit sculptor Jake Harvey RSA who will give us a private tour of his studio at Maxton Cross and share insights of his practice.
