RSA John Kinross Scholarships
This year twelve graduates have received RSA John Kinross Scholarships, which fund a period of 6 to 12 weeks in Florence to research and develop their practice. Florence has been an inspiration to generations of artists and architects and this opportunity allows successful applicants to experience its magnificent history, study its art and architecture, learn the language and create a visual record of their experience.

Madeleine Pearce, DINNERS READY, but nobody is listening (detail)
RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design graduate Madeleine Pearce has received the 2024 RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award. Madeleine plans to use the £2,000 funds to travel to Gujo Hachiman, Japan, the fake food capital of the world. Madeleine uses food as an avenue to explore the human condition and our relationship with each other, examining traditional settings of communication such as dinner tables and public spaces.
Calder Mackay, A just man
RSA David Michie Travel Award
Calder Mackay from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has received the 2024 David Michie Travel Award, which provides £2,500 to a graduating or postgraduate drawing and painting student. Calder will travel to Budapest, Hungary to create series of paintings. The focus will be on examining how men construct their sense of community in Budapest as compared to Scotland, with a particular interest in the older generation
Clare Cooper, Joe and James
RSA Blackadder Houston Student Travel Awards
Clare Cooper and Astrid Wigand have both received the RSA Blackadder Houston Student Travel Award, which funds a period of international travel for graduating and postgraduate painting students from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA)
Clare will use the £3,000 funds to visit Florence to research self-portraiture, narrative painting and improve her observational technique. Her paintings typically use impasto mark-making to depict intimate relationships.
Astrid Wigand, Untitled (Blue)
Astrid will travel to Iceland to investigate the unique volcanic geology and basalt formations, rising perpendicular to the sea, as well as the stark variety of the island’s coastline. Astrid works between painting and textiles, and her minimal approach to the landscape centres on time, labour, and the sea.
