Nearly every page of every one of James Cumming’s amazing sketchbooks are filled with the artist’s unique interpretations of nature, science and language, in line, shape and symbol.
In this sketchbook, dating from 1972, one can see Cumming’s scientific approach linking different matrices of thought (p.46), as he called them. The origins of his interest in early alphabets that led to works like Sumerian Source are found, while connections between the forms of DNA and cellular biology flow into the artist’s original abstractions via his analyses of human and animal figures and structures.
