This sketchbook can be dated to the 1960s when Bill Littlejohn was experimenting with abstraction and compositions featuring many of the seaside motifs that would become a mainstay of his painting.
Littlejohn’s works in the RSA Annual Exhibition of the period often featured still life arrangements in the landscape, with suns and moons, and exploring the effects of different light – in the mould of one of his Hospitalfield peers, James Cowie RSA. This sketchbook shows him working through these ideas and contains many studies that would later be worked up into finished paintings.
