A great traveller, David Michie featured on many RSA committees for the disbursing of funds for travel and was avidly concerned with how these experiences opened a new world for artists.
This sketchbook travelled on Michie’s first trip to Australia (1980). On the one hand are quick studies of new bird species, and on the other, birds-eye views of landscapes flown over. On page 40/41, in an entry dated 20th December, Michie’s poetic description of a landscape is paired with a diagram. At the end, a note to ‘see photo’ points to the strands the artist needs to compose a painting from his sketchbook.
