This sketchbook dates from around 1927 and shows Crozier continuing use of cubism in his sketches. It was in the possession of his friend and painter William Gillies and was donated to the RSA in 1973 as part of the W G Gillies Bequest.
Crozier used geometric analysis of shapes in his depictions of buildings, and was fond of strong charcoal outlines in his sketches. This sketchbook is unique in that it has a range of different subjects, as opposed to Crozier's favoured landscapes. Pages 19 to 21 show the progressive study for Crozier's painting The Cello Player, c.1928, which shared the Guthrie Award for most promising young artist in 1928, and was one of his few figure paintings. Page 47 shows a study for a painting of Colinton church in Edinburgh, purchased in 2023 for the RSA collections.
