This sketchbook was completed during Kirkland Main’s time in Edinburgh College of Art, as a lecturer in Drawing and Painting. The sketches cover a range of subjects, including architecture of Edinburgh, nudes, and animal portraits.
Page 45 indicates an analysis of the human face, exploring the foundations of the human head, through muscular and skeletal form. Although mainly completed in black sketches, there are brief splashes of his frequent colour palette on pages 17, 93, and in some of the animal sketches. On page 33 there is a study for Construction, exhibited in 1978.
