How did the experience affect you as an individual?
Spending two months in Florence with the John Kinross Scholarship had a wonderful effect on me. I felt so lucky to be able to spend such a long period of undisturbed time creating new work and discovering the city and its culture through drawing. The scholarship gave me a real boost in creativity, and it broadened my ideas and approach to making work. As well as this it has given me long lasting friendships.
What was the impact on your practice?
I found the John Kinross Scholarship to be a very focused time for me which really benefited my practice. I became really interested in sacred sites, religious traditions, the act of pilgrimage, stories associated with the Saints and the artwork that has been inspired by them. I think having such a focused period of time developing my ideas and work in Florence certainly helped my work to become more confident. As well as this I found that the imagery I was creating was perhaps not what I was expecting to make. For me this was very positive, because I find when you surprise yourself with the work you make it’s often some of your most interesting pieces.
What would you say the long term impact has been on yourself and you work?
Having come straight from my undergraduate course at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design I think the scholarship really helped me to keep up my momentum when it came to creating new work – which is something which I think has stayed with me since then. As well as this it was a time where I really found my love for sketching outdoors, which has also stayed with me and is something I continue to practice regularly. I am still really interested in sacred sites and stories associated with the Saints, so much so I will be doing another residency in a different part of Italy later this year to continue my research.
