How did the experience affect you as an individual?
The scholarship was an incredible experience of knowing in-depth a city that was the centre of the Art World in the Renaissance. Having the chance to visit museums with plenty of time and calm again and again, appreciate works of architecture, art and textiles that have been essential in the history of art. I was able to dedicate exclusive time to the study of the city of Florence and its urban fabric.
What was the impact on your practice?
The fact of being able to appreciate works of great masters and have exclusive time for it, allowed me to have the time to analyse my own work and practice. The best thing was to be able to create a new piece of work surrounded and influenced by the entire artistic load of the city. I was influenced by old masters but with a contemporary view.
What would you say the long term impact has been on yourself and you work?
As a Chilean artist, I live far from the most influential art world cities. Despite all that technology can bring us, having the opportunity to spend time in Florence was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. From Chile we always look at everything from the periphery, so to have access and live time in the city that was the centre of the Art and Culture in the Renaissance and be able to appreciate it in real life had a strong impact on me and will always be a treasured memory.
