In Residence: New work from RSA Residencies for Scotland artists

The RSA Residencies for Scotland is an artist-led scheme which provides valuable research and residency opportunities for artists. It forges important networks with centres of artistic excellence across Scotland, ranging from traditional residency venues to specialised production facilities.

Open to visual artists at all stages of their careers, the emphasis is on enabling a period of research, development and production, as well as on the acquisition and exchange of new skills and experiences.

Katie Hallam creates sculptural works where new media art meets geology, fossils and contemporary spaces. This allegory is shown in motifs of geology representing ‘ancient power', with the digital age represented by an electrifying palette. Katie considers the traces our digital culture will leave on the earth, evolving and morphing materials transformed into fossilised objects to be found by future archaeologists. Like alchemy, her works connect new technology with archaic power. Her hypnotic digital-mineral hybrid works sit against a background of open, natural and urban landscapes that tease the question of future glitches in nature.

Katie used her time at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop to develop large scale works which represent dramatic future landscapes and sculptural forms. The works aim to challenge a viewer's perception of object and landscape and open up important discussions about the increasing impact digital technologies are having directly on the earth’s surface; changing landscapes and creating new wastelands of disused digital materiality.

Rhona Warwick Paterson is an inter-disciplinary artist working with the written form, sculpture and performance to address feminist readings relating to the environment, culture and society. She is a keen collaborator who often uses experimental approaches in order to make work that is representative of a shared human experience.

Rhona used her time as resident at Cove Park to write Pacing the Void, a site-responsive choreopoem to be performed by Eve Mutso in the Marble Hall at Mount Stuart House on the Island of Bute. The collaboration draws on ancient rituals used by Daoist shamans called ‘Pacing the Void’, a trance-like movement represented as a walk among symbolic stars of The Great Bear.
